ROUTE 66 SCRAPBOOK
New York: At first glance, the newly launched label Clover Canyon seems quite traditional, comprised of slim suiting, soft frock coats and body skimming silk dresses. But L.A. designer Rozae Nichols had more up her sleeve than simple separates, interpreting an imaginary road trip in an unusual manner. Instead of skimming the surface of a desert excursion through the southwest with Native American patterns and loads of turquoise, Nichols channels the retro car culture of Route 66 directly via hallucinatory mirrored car graphics, mesa photo prints and digital basketweaves. Against the backdrop of easy-to-wear chiffon blouses and wide leg pajama pants, Clover Canyon’s trip ended where it began, following the surfers of Southern California into the water, the sky rendered in a lovely pre-dawn pink.—Nina Stotler
