Milan: Massimiliano Giornetti’s Autumn/Winter presentation for Salvatore Ferragamo brought a modern edge to the season with classic shapes in lean linear cuts that prevailed throughout this refreshing lineup. There are few closures showing up in general but Giornetti made a statement with his minimal application of 3 enlarged buttons placed on tailored jackets and coatdresses, wrapping around the body asymmetrically and fastening at one hip while waists were cut high and encircled with modernistic knotted leather belts. Horizontally knit tabard capes in both short and cropped lengths were a welcome change to the classic lineup. However, it was the prints and the colour blocking that brought a true modernist edge to this smart collection, in strong graphic lines and precise colour-blocking that looked not disisimilar to Sonia Delaunay’s artwork – “it is this idea of creating a shape with construction that is extremely precise and modern,”  Goirnetti said. A series of guipure lace shapes and stunned in the finale of this strong collection – both classic and elegant as well as incredibly modern. – Lizzy Bowring
