Classic American sportswear with a chic Seventies touch at Derek Lam

New York: For his Pre-fall inspiration, Derek Lam mentioned an exhibit that had been in his mind for some time: Malevich and the American Legacy, a retrospective of the Russian artist at the Gagosian gallery. The show delved into minimalist Kazemir Malevich’s influence on American art of the Seventies. Lam’s lineup consisted of an array of unfussy urbane separates in clean and fluid cuts – crepe tunics and tops sported circle eyelets and lacing details, flared trousers came in camel tones, precise tailored jackets and outerwear were panelled and colour-blocked. Equally great were a Malevich-signature red leather coat, a pair of front-folded camel culottes and an impeccable white dress with a western-inspired black fringe detail.  Each piece embodied the luxurious simplicity and sophistication found at the designer’s brand DNA. – Diego Sanchez
