Citizen Hip: The Lake & Stars

tls_bio_bw.jpg

Recent winners of the prestigious Ecco Domani grant, Maayan Zilberman and Nikki Dekker of The Lake & Stars have an unconventional approach to lingerie design, creating statement pieces that aren’t meant to be covered up. When they’re not testing new dying techniques or art directing their photo shoots, the pioneering design duo can be found perusing vintage stores in SoHo, filling up on Vietnamese, or getting inspired behind the stacks of the Met’s Costume Institute Library.

“I love this restaurant not only because it’s in my neighborhood and it’s delicious, but also because I feel like I’ve walked into The City of Lost Children upon entering and completely forget where I am while I’m there.” -Nikki

“When I’m about to book an impromptu trip to Europe I go here. It has the romance of a medieval castle filled with art (that’s romantic, right?) but has the added bonus of lots of outdoor space which appeals to the North Dakota girl in me.” -Nikki

“This ‘90s era shoe and jacket shop still has stash from the early days when designer shoes were hard to come by. I love getting dead stock there cause you can usually find the original shoes that inspired the Balenciagas, Pradas, and Proenzas… It’s a goldmine.” -Maayan

“Nikki and I used to have all our meetings here, before I made the entire apartment into an office. We always order the same items by number as they appear on the menu. They have the best sticky rice and vegetarian dishes.” -Maayan

“Our friend Jordan Silver has the best new-vintage collections in town. He always gives us amazing stuff to try when we stop in. My favorites are the Gaultier frames Madonna wore in an early Vanity Fair editorial…the ones with the screws on the sides. We also love to hang out in the back room with Jordan and Stephanie’s puppies!” –Maayan

“Our friend Julie Le is the librarian there and she books private appointments for us in the stacks to show us stuff that appeals to us each season. She also bakes these amazing cakeballs and sneaks them in our bags as we leave! Another reason we think this place is magical: the librarian wears our lingerie under her tweed suit!” -Maayan
