Citizen Hip: Kathy Kemp Curates New York

Heralded by Time Out New York as “the Diane Von Furstenberg for generation Y,” Kathy Kemp is known for her downtown designs that are a favorite amongst local it-girls. When she’s not busy buying yardage for limited-edition wares or unearthing some dazzling treats for herself, you might find her snacking on oysters or styling customers at her longstanding East Village boutique, Anna.

Albertine General
13 Christopher Street 10014 / +1 212 924 8515
Neighborhood: West Village
I head over to Albertine General whenever I need a spectacular gift or something dazzling for myself. This place is always filled with the best vintage jewelry and also carries pieces from some of my favorite designers like Three Turtle Doves and Madame Fortuna. Owner Kyung Lee is a world-class accessorizes maven and always has great suggestions.

Black Market
110 Avenue A 10009 / +1 212 614 9798
Neighborhood: East Village
This place is my latest restaurant obsession and it’s right around the corner from my store, Anna. The oysters are probably the best I’ve ever eaten and the cocktails are original and sublime. I always feel like a real downtowner when I eat here.

Mood Fabrics
225 West 37th Street, 3rd floor 10018 / +1 212 730 5003
Neighborhood: Garment District
Mood has the best selection of fabrics in NYC and the prices are pretty reasonable. Even though it has grown vastly since I started shopping there in the 90’s, it’s still a family run business and feels like a mom-and-pop shop to me. I’m usually at Mood at least once a day.

The Beauty Department at Bergdorf Goodman
754 5th Avenue 10019 / +1 212 753 7300
Neighborhood: Midtown
There’s no way I would ever shop for makeup and skin care products anywhere else. Bergdorf’s combines an old school vibe with the best selection of products. The people who work there are always knowledgeable and friendly and I can never get out of there without at least one fantastic perfume.

MoMA – The Museum of Modern Art
11 West 53rd Street / +1 212 708 9400
Neighborhood: Midtown
I know that everyone already knows about this one, but my list wouldn’t be authentic without it. The collection, special exhibits, the films, the cafeteria… For me this place is the ideal New York experience and the best way to spend an afternoon in the city.
