Citizen Hip: Jason Denham’s Amsterdam Attractions

Denim veteran Jason Denham gained his experience in the denim market at Joe Casely-Hayford, Pepe jeans, Clinic+ and Blue Blood, before finally launching his eponymous line. With locations in Amsterdam, London and Tokyo, the brand’s focus is on premium denim of artisanal quality using Japanese selvage denim and techniques such as inner-waistband tailoring and box-finished buttonholes, not to mention unrivaled customer service. With his keen eye and impeccable taste, Jason gives us his hit list of recommendations in his hometown city.

Sourced & Sold – SHOP
Eerste Tuindwarsstraat 16 1015 / +31 (0)642228286
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
My second passion (after denim) is architecture and interior design.  There is a very cool, small interior workshop/store just off the Westerstraat, which specializes in mid-century industrial furniture.

Fens Décor – SHOP
Prinsengracht 12 1015 / +31 (0)621225875
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
Fens Décor on the Prinsengracht is very special, featuring mostly French and Belgian pieces.

Foodware – EAT & DRINK
Looiersgracht 12 1016 / +31 (0)206208898
Neighborhood: Centraal
There are a handful of Foodware locations in the city, located in Centraal, the Jordaan and the Oud South. My favorite is the Centraal location, just off the Prinsengracht. This is a very simple deli and kitchen run by guys who love food and are very passionate about what they do. The interior also reflects their very good taste.

Toscanini – EAT & DRINK
Lindengracht 75 1015 / +31 (0)206232813
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
Amsterdam’s best Italian can be had at Toscanini. Book 1 month in advance and try to get the table in the Kitchen…and always take what the chef recommends.

Sama Sebo – EAT & DRINK
P.C. Hooftstraat 27 1071 / +31 (0)206628146
Neighborhood: Oud Zuid
The city’s best Indonesian (a specialty in Amsterdam) is at Samo Sebo on P.C. Hooftstraat. It’s the oldest Indonesian spot in town, and also the best. The service is amazing the waiters have been working there for more than 30 years, always busy, always perfect. Try the rice tafel, but there are lots of perfect small dishes.

Bo Cinq – EAT & DRINK
Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 53-59 1017 / +31 (0)206220682
Neighborhood: Leidseplein/South Jordaan/Canals
The best hip dining spot is Bo Cinq.  It has a long bar complemented by a cool lounge and a very good Moroccan/fusion restaurant. It has a New York spirit.

Amsterdamse Bos – RELAX
Less than 4km for the city center by bicycle, via Amstelveenseweg.
Neighborhood: Amstelveen
I love to walk my Labradors in the parks, the Bos is great – it’s huge, great for people watching, walking, running, rowing, dancing, partying….whatever – it’s Amsterdam!

Café Tabac – EAT & DRINK
Brouwersgracht 101 1015 / +31 (0)206224413
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
Tabac is a great, bustling Amsterdam bar. It’s full of both Dutch locals and international clientele, and it’s right on the canal in the perfect spot for when the sun is shining.

Café ‘T Smalle – EAT & DRINK
Egelantiersgracht 12 1015 / 31 (0)206239617
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
Café ‘T Smalle. Coffee on the canal. It’s a great spot.  Perfect to watch the world go by.

Reflex Gallery* & Gallery Vassie** – SEE
*Weteringschans 79 A 1017 / +31 (0)206272832
Neighborhood: Leidseplein/South Jordaan/Canals
**Langestraat 47 1015 / +31 (0)685724797
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
I collect photography, and Reflex Gallery and Gallery Vassie are my favorites. They bring great collections to Amsterdam on a regular basis, always worth checking out.

Noordermarkt – EAT & DRINK
Noordermarkt 44 1015
Neighborhood: North Jordaan/Canals
This is the best organic shopping market in Amsterdam, selling every local item that you need to try. Beware, or else you could very easily end up buying everything in sight!

Denham – SHOP
Prinsengracht 493-495 1016 / +31 (0)203315039
Neighborhood: De Negen Straatjes
…Naturally, it’s my favorite store. Check out the Service center…It’s one of a kind.
