New York: After recently severing his ties with Versus, Christopher Kane seemed to renew his commitment to his signature label, releasing his first-ever Pre-Fall collection this season. The assortment captured the creepy-edgy-seductive vibe that permeated his S/S 13 show. However, rather than the ethereal sheers and soft pastels of the previous offering, Kane went darker and heavier, using velvet and leather in inky blue, violet, and black. Some elements from his previous work returned, including shredded denim and a stiff A-line silhouette. Also, image of monsters, such as Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon referenced the memorable Frankenstein tee from Spring. Jackets and coats quilted in precise squares had a futuristic feel, as did angular leather dresses and floral prints in unnatural blue and petrol green tones. Bits of chiffon and romantic ruching helped to soften the looks a bit. The juxtaposition of sweet and edgy, sci-fi and romance is what makes Kane’s collections so irresistible and keeps his clients coming back for more.–Joanna Manganaro
