It just wouldn’t be the holiday season without getting excited over the Christmas window displays at department stores around the world.
Typically, department stores use the holiday season as an opportunity to escape reality, with messages of hope and positivity. Certainly, this year’s offerings are no different, with upbeat, celebratory Christmas windows. The references to hygge, fairytales and inclusivity are acting as a counterbalance to the turbulent political climate.
At WGSN, we’ve picked our top three displays of 2017 (which you have to get on your Instagram’s before the New Year.)
Designed to delight and spread a positive, inclusive message during the festive period, rainbow colourways are worked across the energetic displays. This vivid palette is accentuated through innovative lighting techniques involving thousands of LED lights, 382 rotating mirror balls, vinyl stars and holographic backgrounds, all of which chaotically collide in true Harvey Nichols style.
This year, Bergdorf Goodman’s Holiday windows are titled ‘To New York With Love’, with each window depicting one of the city’s most famous cultural institutions. Those represented include the New York Botanical Garden, the New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the New York Historical Society.
Le BHV/Marais celebrates Christmas in Danish style, drawing inspiration from hygge: the warming and comforting feeling of enjoying simple homespun pleasures. Each of the windows reinterprets a tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, including the little fir tree and the wild swans or the Queen of the Ice. To aid authenticity, Le BHV/Marais partnered with the Danish Embassy, the Danish House and Visit Denmark.
