Christian Dior

TODAY’S BALLET
Paris: After playing it safe for Pre-Fall, Dior’s Bill Gaytten brought back bite to the label this season while staying within the bounds of the house’s heritage. Amid soft and feminine mid-calf silk skirts, cinched three-quarter sleeve jackets and raglan sleeve coats, the designer introduced black leather dresses and tunics, abstracted houndstooth and shiny teal furs. These pieces felt edgy for Gaytten and styling allowed even the prettier ensembles a bit of tough swagger with close-fitting knit caps and wide leather belts. Fall’s sweetness came through knotted necklines, frothy pastels and ballet references like tiered chiffon skirts and wrapped cardigans, a theme carried into evening with sheer pleated gowns well-suited for any dance.—Nina Stotler
