Chicago Goes PUBLIC

Billing itself as “Great Service, Great Value, Great Style, For Everyone,” Chicago’s new PUBLIC hotel is brought to you by one of the creators of NYC’s famed Studio 54, world-renowned hotelier Ian Schrager.

PUBLIC is a luxury hotel for the people, with rates for its 285 guest rooms running not much higher than your run-of-the-mill chain establishment but featuring all the comforts of a swanky boutique hotel. What comforts could you possibly secure for under $300 a night? How about a soothing ‘no color’ scheme, down comforters and pillows, flat screen LCD TVs, 300 thread count linens from the coveted Frette brand, iPod/iPhone docking station, a 24-hour fitness center, and cell phones, iPads and iPods available for guest use. Impressive stuff.

As if that’s not enough, PUBLIC also features the newly revamped Pump Room restaurant, where 2011 James Beard award-winning chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has created breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner menus full of reasonably priced and locally sourced dishes, from grilled Lake Superior Whitefish to fried organic chicken. Over the years, the Pump Room has played host to folks such as David Bowie, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Susan Sarandon and Dustin Hoffman, but if you’d prefer to stay holed up in your room, no problem: the Pump Room Express will deliver straight to your door. If you’d like to go out and explore the Windy City with the fortifying aid of a picnic lunch, the Pump Room Express can arrange that too, packing your food in super-cute brown paper bags you’ll be proud to sport.

Feeling social but still need to get some work done? Head on down to The Living Room, located in the lobby, where communal worktables, comfy chairs and 21.5-inch iMacs await you (there are also tons of outlets if you’d prefer to bring your own computer). When you’re done with work, relax in The Library in front of a roaring fire and enjoy a cup of coffee by day, or snacks and cocktails by night.
