Chanel Fall 2017 Haute Couture Collection: In the shadow of the Eiffel Tower

Haute Couture is often the place where designers experiment with wild abandon, all the quirky and off-the-wall ideas that they couldn’t put in the main shows in February and September. And yet, not this season, Karl’s Chanel Fall 2017 Haute Couture Collection was more pared back, a nod to the turn of the century- the early 1900s where the silhouettes focused on bold shapes, rounded sleeves, very sculptural, with an emphasis on the waist.

And this collection was a modern, commercial take on the shapes of then, rather than an Instagram worthy spectacle.

It was the setting that filled that desire for an ostentatious spectacle, a remade Eiffel Tower surrounded by a Parisian garden recreated in life size in the Grand Palais. The invitation to the show helped to build the buzz of what visitors were set to lay their eyes on.

From a commercial standpoint, the key fashion takeaways are: Rounded sleeves, antique blouses, romantic details.
