The latest Chanel Cruise 2018 collection was presented yesterday in Paris, but not the Paris that comes to mind. Traditional landmarks were replaced by Karl Lagerfeld’s world: an Ancient Greek themed runway, a complete spectacle with faux ancient ruins and models clothed in draped dresses and gladiator sandals.
Lagerfeld is no stranger to a fashion spectacle, each season offers up a new backdrop, a new way of looking at fashion and design. This back to Greek civilization is an interesting theme that Chanel is exploring this season, as the general feeling within fashion recently has felt like a craving for back to basics. Also the idea of women as goddesses feels very fitting for now, with women, femininity and feminism front and centre of the fashion discussion.
Cruise or Resort is a slightly odd collection rollout, because in reality the average consumer probably doesn’t know about or understand this fashion terminology, but the collections are hugely important and perfect for the luxury consumer who is preparing for travel and vacations. Key items were updated here by Chanel: a standard swimsuit came with added allure, two-pieces for the younger body conscious consumer, and glamorous cover-ups for the more mature audience. The accessories were evolved versions of what we’ve seen before, think the demure Chanel headband but in a gold braid, perfect for daytime by the beach. Also, branded earrings (similar to the luxury branding we saw on the catwalk at YSL- a return to celebrating logos) were key.
All in all it was a light, airy show, complete with the key pieces one expects to see at Chanel (for its core consumer base) with a few exciting pieces for the new, viral, Instagram-obsessed Millennial consumer.
