Versailles: The frothy frocks of France’s 18th century gentry met fitting matches in 50s-prim and 90s-Rave proportions at Chanel’s C/R 13 presentation. Lagerfeld’s cotton candy pinks and dusted sky blues layered themselves atop delicately fabricated whites for a confectionary palette upon which Marie Antoinette herself would suggest her subjects dine. The house’s signature tweeds were realized in neat weaves for slim jacket shapes, finding contrast through pairings with denim in retro-70s mid and light tones. Volume was expressed below the waist with full-skirted shapes and dramatic wide-legged trousers fit for the most polished of Party Monsters. The accessories buzz was stolen by the show’s white-soled, “flatform” brogues, an irreverent take on the classic creeper. —Kibwe Chase-Marshall
