Opening tomorrow at London’s White Cube Hoxton Square is ‘Most Wanted’ by Richard Phillips: a selection of ten portraits featuring America’s most instantly recognizable celebrities from the realms of television, cinema and music.
The two-meter high canvases of Chace Crawford, Kristen Stewart, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Momsen, Dakota Fanning, Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Robert Pattinson will line the gallery walls, each depicted against ‘step and repeat’ backdrops, familiar to film premieres and awards ceremonies, which display a variety of luxury brand logos.
As a constant influx of celebrity imagery crowds our everyday environment, these paintings are meant to provide viewers with an opportunity to consider our relationships with these icons, as well as the vested interests that support them.
All of the portraits are outlined in “halos,” inspired by Richard Bernstein’s Interview magazine cover art illustrations, which are meant to emphasize the electric celebrity of these secular “deities” while at once flattening their images and morphing them into the brands they represent.
