The city of Paris is steeped in nostalgia and possesses the power to evoke feelings of decades past – and it’s something that is synonymous with the Chanel brand.
Late last night, the Grand Palais played host to a 330-foot-long ocean liner, under and around which Chanel’s Cruise collection took on a very literal sense.
It felt as though Lagerfeld had dipped back into the rich archives of Chanel for his Pre Spring/Summer 19 collection, playing on that nostalgia – striking the right balance, however, between reminiscence and commerciality.
Here, the WGSN Catwalks team identifies the key trends and items from within the show.
The Femme Form
It’s no secret that we’ve been calling out the strength femininity as a cornerstone of catwalk trends.
From our Catwalk Predictions A/W 18/19, where we predicted catwalks becoming more informed by the political landscape, to the Femme Form Trend Alert during Paris Fashion Week AW18 – a celebration of femininity is becoming increasingly commonplace.
Chanel’s latest offering builds on this trend, with waist-focused silhouettes, often revealing the skin and the typical Chanel tweed dresses are given a slim shape with an ultra-short update.
The latest update on femininity? A fluid, chemise dress that floats away from the body.
The Wide-leg Trouser
In line with WGSN’s Buyers’ Briefing for Womenswear S/S 19, a relaxed, wide leg pant trends heavily in Chanel’s Cruise collection.
A cross category product that feels equally at home in an office or down on the riviera, the Chanel collection was peppered with this versatile trouser.
A now classic item, the striped detailing adds a pre-summer update and amplifies oversized proportions.
The Bateau Neckline
Embodying true cruise-wear, nautically-inspired, swooping and open bateau necklines also featured.
Playing on nostalgia, this shape feels reminiscent of Coco Chanel’s own yachting vacation wear, but strong logos and bright pastels transport this straight into Spring Summer 19.
