California Dreaming


Tucked under the covers and half-dreaming on a chilly October morning in New York, I think of palm trees and swimming pools and imagine that I’m in L.A. – speeding down an abandoned freeway, a warm breeze on my face. Hey wait…that is a warm breeze on my face! I am in L.A. – and it’s Fashion Week! Check it out…
So Sunday was the first official day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week L.A. at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. I met up with my Stylesight colleague Courtney, and we decided to dive right in and check out Nicky Hilton’s Chick show – a more casual, fun, and youthful (not to mention just plain better) alternative to her Nicholai line that she debuted during the recent New York collections. Bai Ling, Jaime Pressly, Lady Victoria Hervey, Casey Johnson, and (of course) Kathy and Rick Hilton joined a packed house. Paris was noticeably absent – as she was in New York as well – presumably an attempt to keep all of the cameras focused on Nicky who has yet to make an adult film. I loved the flirty apple-print minidresses and totes, bib-front denim short shorts, and skinny black jeans with apple applique on one back pocket. This collection was achingly cute…
Other highlights from Sunday – shooting lots of photos of the cool crowd who came out to Smashbox, meeting Anna and Mollie from the hot accessories/handbag line Jack Rabbit, getting invited to adorable Allia’s sweet sixteen party, chatting with Lady Vic backstage about the vintage Ceil Chapman coat she was sporting (she was Marilyn Monroe’s favorite designer), and noticing lots of great shoes – from Allia’s Azzedine Alaia platform pumps to the guy with metal studded Converse he “bought in Japan”. But wait – did you think we were finished yet? Later Sunday night (and on into early Monday morning, naturally) we joined Emile Hirsch, Kim Kardashian, Brody Jenner, and others at celebrity petting zoo Hyde on Sunset Blvd. for a discussion of the socio-political climate of modern day Uzbekistan. And you thought L.A. lacked culture and sophistication…
