Burberry Prorsum

Christopher Bailey took the iconic trench that is Burberry Prorsum’s signature, and elevated it with masterful drapery and exquisite feminine details. For one of the most delightful ideas so far this season, the runway show was broadcast live on the label’s website at 7pm London time last night, which made for perfect lunch-hour viewing in New York. Luxe fabrics like duchess satin, lightweight cashmere and silk chiffon were gathered in towards the body, and manipulated into knots, twists, and feminine shirred effects. Despite all the softness, each piece was firmly constructed, creating a shell-like architecture for the body. Tucks and pleats emphasized shoulders and hemlines and transformed raincoats into coatdresses. The shirred detail was carried over to skinny pants, draped mini-skirts, sky-high sandals and small top-handle bags that were held like clutches. A few whitened pastels — mint, lavender and powder blue — lightened the mostly neutral palette. A trenchcoat-appropriate “rain” of glitter ended the presentation, now available on-demand on http://burberry.vogue.co.uk/
