New York: Big, bold patterns characterized Christopher Bailey’s latest offering for Burberry Prorsum. Stripes, zig-zags, and chevrons made for a collection with plenty of graphic interest. The chevron-pattern coats and jackets in particular made one think of the work of artist and designer, Sonia Delaunay. Another influence was one that Bailey has touched on many times before – 60s Mod. This time, however, the references were subtle. Cloche hats, turtlenecks, and boxy jackets spoke of the era. Luxurious materials, including bonded leather, plush fur, haircalf, python, and pony skin elevated the already-elegant looks. Though the trench coats are always a highlight, the surprise standout this season were form-fitting dresses incorporating bustier elements, some of which featured seductive mesh panels and/or complex Fortuny pleats.–Joanna Manganaro
