One of the world’s oldest annual racing events, the Boston Marathon, will run it’s 116th race on Monday sponsored by John Hancock Financial Services. The event has maintained it’s prestige in the running world by its limited entry via qualification , creating a longstanding goal for distance runners. Footwear brands rush to be apart of the big event, with adidas launching new gear, and both Vibram and New Balance opening flagship stores to outfit the scores of runners over the race weekend.
All eyes are on adidas’ Geoffrey Mutai, who recorded the fastest-ever recorded marathon time at last year’s Boston Marathon at 02:03:02, his greatest career achievement. As well as fighting to defend his title, Mutai will also be fighting for the chance to run for Kenya this summer at the Olympic Games, the coveted three spots are not yet guaranteed.
adidas is taking its 23rd year as the official footwear and apparel supplier for the Boston Marathon, launching a future Boston365 program to provide assessment, coaching, and training in partnership with Fleet Feet Sports, as well as unveiling the adiZero Boston 3 and the Adios 2, both available now at the pre-race Expo.
For a sneak peek at the new kicks before they hit the pavement Monday, the Active Team swung one of the six Super Runner’s Shop locations in NYC to check out the Boston 3 ‘Electricity’ and ‘Core Energy’ colorways, both representing the official Boston 2012 colors.

Not to be outdone, Boston-based company New Balance is celebrating its roots by adding local pride to the lightweight 890. The blue upper sports a lobster icon on a bespecked sole, with insoles stamped with other Beantown commodities.
