If like us you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live then you’ll remember the collection of 7″ releases from Fred Armisen’s fictional “SNL” bands last year. One of those bands, is the denim-clad Blue Jean Committee, a 70s-inspired band composed of Armisen and former “SNL” co-star Bill Hader. The pair created the band as a parody of the soul and soft rock that was big in the 70s, featuring the faux legends from the final episode of their mockumentary series Documentary Now!
Last month, Drag City released Catalina Breeze, an EP collecting seven of the band’s (very real) songs, along with an idyllic psychedelic video for its title track. A press release describes the band thusly: “Inspired by such laid back duos as Loggins & Messina, Seals & Crofts, Becker & Fagan and England Dan and John Ford Coley and well-versed in the ‘Lido Shuffle,’ to boot, the Blue Jean Committee were the proud products of the late ’70s Northampton, Massachusetts music scene.”
In the video, sepia drenched clips of live performance shots are interspersed with studio tomfoolery, stock footage of sunny California, and many instances of the band mates goofing around together. And of course just like bands of the era, the group come dressed in retro double denim looks.
The Blue Jean Committee also appeared as a live performance of “Late Night With Seth Meyers” (where Armisen leads the house band) to perform “Catalina Breeze”. You can watch a video of that performance below.
Additionally, the band will also appear in the upcoming season finale of IFC’s “Documentary Now!”, Hader and Armisen’s series of faux documentaries. Below, you can watch a preview of that episode, which is titled “Gentle & Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee”.
