Black Hole Sun

New York…Odyn Vovk

Showing his very first collection, LA native Austin Sherbanenko is continually inspired by all things dark and dreary. In fact, he seeks solace in an almost all black color palette. The designer thinks it’s void of distraction, allowing for a complete appreciation of detail. For a first collection, the styles would probably be at home on a fashion-forward runway in Paris (and that’s a good thing). The clothes have rips, frays, plunging necklines, and long, skinny silhouettes. Lots of midnight navy jackets had black leather trims and details, making a kind of goth varsity jacket. Others had zig-zag plackets to add some interest to an otherwise solid, basic item. An occassional dark brown or ivory, albeit neutral in essence, became the ultimate pop of bold color for this black collection.

  • It’s amazing that young designers are starting their own collections and having shows in this economic climate, good for him! You’re right, looks more Paris than LA. Lot of interesting details…

  • The industrial/goth overtones seen on this seasons runways are a really strong look. Its admirable see how designers such as Odyn Vovk and Rick Owens can present such interesting textures, beautiful fabrics and intricate detailing through a monochromatic color palette.
