Diego Binetti announced his arrival this fashion week in dramatic style, with a series of looks embellished with bells and mirrors that provided both auditory and visual stimulation.  The designer always displays a worldly awareness in his work, and this season he found inspiration in his travels through Southeast Asia, mixed with visions of future exploration beyond.  Adapted from the textiles and traditional costume of Laos and Thailand, eye-catching flora and fauna prints were used for dresses and tops that were then trimmed with raffia fringe, metal plates and oversized baubles.  Tan leather leggings, gilded with gold plates and rivets, suggested a sort of Space Age Indiana Jones.  Although the “pomp and circumstance” made for an entertaining show, Binetti was at his most impressive in the quieter moments.  Colorful landscape motifs added freshness to the ubiquitous shirtdress and caftan, and a trapunto-quilted color-blocked jacket showed off his expert tailoring skills.
