Billy Reid

New York: Billy Reid’s Alabama roots have always found a place in his mostly classics-driven collections. For S/S 12, he finally merged the easygoing nature of the American South with the pulse and energy of New York City. Underscoring the intended bohemian nature of the season, Reid presented a variety of intriguing textures and patterns, some inspired by home textiles. The designer told press he was interested in exploring the revival of the American songwriter, referencing the lost days of the artists who lived in Laurel Canyon. “That spirit seems very much alive today – folks from L.A., New York, Muscle Shoals, Austin, and Nashville are blending together to make some incredible new music.” A subtle hint of 70s was present in the form of wide lapels on suits, a washed-out color palette, and hair and grooming that expressed an anti-establishment ethos.  —Michael Fisher
