THE WOODSMAN
New York: Billy Reid’s F/W 13 show continued to explore the designer’s interest in non-hackneyed Americana, showing a mix of rough but graceful items that included a number of sly materials and details. Reid himself stated that for this collection he sought “Elegance that has a warmth, yet a street toughness – wearable and functional luxury and a modern approach to traditional American clothing.” And he largely delivered. Working off a palette inspired by trees and woodland flora, Reid’s looks exuded ease and rugged individualism, particularly where trimmed with all-American materials like sheared nutria fur. His trousers were straight, but easy, with the slightest hint of a break, while pea coats and chore coats had satisfyingly blocky shapes, that exuded utility and permanence. Reid’s new collaboration with Coach provided another highlight, as sturdy leather travelers looked indestructibly luxe. This show reaffirmed Reid’s intelligence and inventiveness, as he maintained his unique viewpoint and style, while offering fresh and inspiring looks. –Andrew Luecke
