Billy Reid

New York:
There is some sense that Billy Reid, and his preppy, Alabama-based operation, is America’s designer. So it’s interesting that as American-inspired sportswear, with its bright preppy palate and soft shoulders has recently hit so hard in Milan, that Reid would be one to bring us finely-structured suits topped off by dramatically roped shoulders, that most Italian of suiting constructs. Add to this plenty of amazing tweeds, checks, double vents, and treated-cotton trenchcoats that screamed English, and it was hard to tell who this guy was supposed to be working for. But, as they say in South, the devil is in the details, and so it was here, as Reid’s garments revealed All-American ingredients like coyote, wild alligator, and sheared nutria (a giant swamp rodent found in Reid’s birth state of Louisiana), proving that though the designer set his sights abroad his heart remains at home.  —Andrew Luecke
