To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Giro d’Italia, Italy’s equivalent of the Tour de France which takes place May 9-31 2009, Dolce & Gabbana re-designed the iconic pink jersey, which was based on the traditional “Maglia Rosa” first created 77 years ago and worn by the winner of each stretch of the race. The freedom that comes along with biking has gotten a lot of attention lately, showing up in a plehtora of designer collaborations like Fendi’s assortment of bikes in its Milan flagship, as well as visual displays by Adidas and even a special blinged-out bike by Swarovski! For their jersey design, Dolce & Gabbana have plans to auction customized replicas of it to benefit victims of last month’s Abruzzo earthquake. These collaborations mark yet even more successful examples of sport and fashion coming together. Click here to check out a recent Design Capsule report all about cycling.
