BIG IDEAS | Hussein Chalayan + Marjolaine Ryley

Fashion designer Hussein Chalayan recently collaborated with British photographer Marjolaine Ryley to create “Portraits with a Jacket,” a special project for the magazine NºC. The photo shoot features seven child refugees living in an asylum center in St. Niklaas, Belguim. Each child shares their candid thoughts on war and wears an oversized jacket symbolizing the mature feelings and responsibilities they are faced with daily.

“I don’t like war. Because it kills people. Some of my my family were killed in war. One was hit in his feet and then he died. War is crazy. It’s not good.”

–Andrej Sokolov, age 9, Moldavia, Russia

“I think of dead people. Sophie, a girl in my class lived in Congo and she has a scar on her leg from the war. This is scary. I don’t want to go through that.”

Deborah Van Cayzeele, age 8, Belgium
