Last night we attended a very exciting event for London’s vintage denim scene. Jeaneology is a collection of high-grade, collectable denim amassed by Beyond Retro over the years, and it now has a special space within the Brick Lane branch of the store.
The event was attended by many die-hard indigo fans and collectors of authentic vintage denim, and was accompanied by a bluegrass band and fueled by vintage-style brews by Jeremiah Weed.
The huge denim haul now in-store includes collectables dating as far back as the 1930s. Usually snapped up by buyers, collectors and rivet heads in a matter of minutes, there’s now a chance for everyone to own something collectable and unique.
The collection highlights included a 1930s Type I jacket, a 194’s Levis XX jean, a 1950s 503, a 1940s type II jacket…and so much in between.
The focus of the haul is on Levi’s product, with tons of “big E” jeans and plenty of selvedge denim, but there are also items from Lee and Wrangler such as Rider jackets, Railroad jackets and coveralls – even a large collection of baby- and kid-sized denim. The special evening was accompanied by an insightful guide to collectable denim by Chris Skitch from the blog Blue Gold Blues. He spoke about the origins of denim from workwear and the Gold Rush period, through to cowboys on the ranch, then on to the popularization of denim in the 50s and 60s as the jean transitioned from workwear to fashion item.
He pointed out the tell-tale details to look out for to help date a denim find such as labels, zippers, the metal used in hardware and design details such as back cinches and pockets. Chris was an enthusiastic and passionate teacher and shared many denim fables, facts and pointers with the rapt audience – a few new denim-heads were born last night!
The staff at Beyond Retro are also celebrating Jeaneology week at the store by showing off their favorite denim ensembles here. Join in on the experience and head down to Beyond Retro to grab yourself a piece of history!
