BIKE MESSENGER BELLES
New York: In the wacky-wonderful world of Betsey Johnson, punky prints, tutus and tiers are always in style and they made their obligatory appearance on her runway this season. Dubbed “Le Tour de Betsey,” Johnson took her fans on an imaginary bike tour of the city, with a video of Johnson playing in the background of the designer cycling through Lincoln Center, Central Park and to all of her stores in the city. At one point, the magnetic Ms. Johnson’s video almost threatened to steal the show, but the over-the-top girly looks drew the audience back to the dynamic runway. The tour began in Brooklyn, with cheekily insolent checkerboard prints appearing on bodysuits and spandex knits, softened with ruffled peplums and toughened up with bike messenger hats. The next two stops were uptown and featured feminine confections and vintage-inspired floral prints. For the next stop Johnson made her way to the seaport with Breton stripes, wide-leg trousers and double-breasted jackets, topped off with a sailor hat. The show ended in Times Square at New Year’s Eve with a parade of fluorescent dresses with outsized skirts. Though Johnson never strays far from her established formula, it’s impossible not to get caught up in her excitement. Her signature cartwheel at the end of the show demonstrated her endless energy and passion for the eternally spuky style that has made her the household name she is today.
