Housed in what was once a commercial laundry facility, this popular restaurant stays true to its heritage. Italian for ‘old laundry’ Lavanderia Vecchia‘s decor is a whimsical reminder of the building’s former use, with ironing boards and washing machines positioned throughout the industrial space and starched dishcloths hung out to “dry” on clothespins. If you go for lunch, it will look lovely, but go for dinner and you’re in for a whole different experience. At night, Lavanderia Vecchia’s lighting scheme is a bold mix of diffused UV purple and neon green, adding a modern touch to the stark space. Tucked away in a dark alley, a reservation is required to dine at this hard-to-find gem, with the open kitchen creating prix fixe menu of antipasti, risotto and either fish or meat, plus a delightfully decadent dessert. —Ashley Churchill
