TOUGH + TENDER
New York: Belstaff’s new owners, Labelux, have been pushing hard for the label to make a comeback. There are the flashy new ads shot by Craig McDean, the new stores opening in London and New York, and the new designer, Martin Cooper, who was the longtime vice president of design at Burberry. For spring, Cooper drew inspiration from Belstaff’s heritage as a maker of outerwear. There were sturdy fabrics, like heavy linen, industrial twill, and leather, and straps, snaps and buckles adorned most pieces, but the shapes were all feminine. Jackets were cut slim and often belted, creating an hourglass silhouette. Shorts were extra short, and dresses were easy and fluid. Coatdresses were the perfect combination of the tough heritage details and the new focus on femininity. –Joanna Manganaro
