A curated selection of the top products and brands that are great for you, your skin and the planet.
I’m not going to lie – I haven’t always been that bothered about sustainability. Like a lot of people I know it’s always seemed a little removed from my day to day life, a bit like when everyone’s talking about whatever Kanye did at some awards show and my feelings turn quickly from ‘what!’ to ‘and what?’.
That all changed a few months back though – not because I had an epiphany or anything but because I just happened to learn a lot more about the issues facing our planet and as skincare is my daily saviour I decided there was no better place to start than with the products I slather on my face every morning. Below is are my favourite planet-friendly products as well as the low down on my skincare routine:
1. Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm:
I’ve only recently started using this balm, but I’m hooked already. Rich in Hungarian moor mud – it’s packed to the brim with complex minerals, calcium, magnesium carbonates, humic and fulvic acid for a smooth and oh-so pleasurable cleansing ritual that leaves skin super soft and supple. Melting into the skin with the greatest of ease, its oily base is perfect for deep skin hydration, or to be used for a more in-depth, spa like facial treatment every couple of weeks. Powered by the brand’s patented Hydro Mineral Transference system, it’s the use of Hungary’s mineral rich thermal waters that really stands it apart, and all this without any synthetic ingredients.
2. Aesop Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Toner:
A hero product without a doubt, this toner has single-handedly helped my skin become less reactive to the city’s most destructive element; pollution. Applied morning and night, I literally press the product into my skin for five seconds using just my hands, ensuring I cover the whole of my face so those pesky little hidden bits around the nose and jaw line aren’t left out. Helping to gently close the pores, it manages to avoid leaving you with that ‘tight-face-feeling’ which, lets face it, is just a little bit weird. Renowned for their use of safe and plant-based ingredients, Aesop has supported and pioneered sustainable initiatives for some time, from their partnership with Natura in Brazil through to the design of their world-wide, truly unique stores.
3. Foreo Luna Mini 2 Save the Sea Special Edition:
My Foreo Luna Mini is integral to maintaining my complexion – helping to smooth and slough away any dead and dry cells for skin that is left as smooth as a baby’s tush after every use. As a result, I couldn’t be happier that this July sees them launching a limited edition variety in partnership with GreenWave and SEA LIFE Trust, with proceeds going towards ocean conservation efforts in a bid to save our seas. From helping with the rehabilitation of endangered sea life through to the building of restorative ocean farms, this little silicone brush is more powerful than it looks.
4. Neal’s Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm:
This little beaute is an all-in-one jobby – by day a rich cleanser and gentle exfoliator and by night a nourishing and moisturising balm. Some would say you don’t need anything else, they might be right. Made up of 99% organic ingredients, the combination of wild rose seed oil, jojoba oil, shea butter and hemp seed oil makes for a beautifully soft texture that helps to repair, firm and smooth the skin.
5. Earth Tu Face Honey & Coconut Mask:
Founded in California back in 2010, Earth Tu Face is a lovely, purely plant-based, 100% natural skincare line that uses only active ingredients for products that not only help but also protect. From their reusable, recyclable and compostable containers through to their bid to be as transparent as possible, this brand is like a perfectly wrapped gift to the planet. For me, it is their Honey and Coconut Mask that really stands out. A fusion of anti-oxidant rich honey, coconut, rose petals and lavender buds helps to heal inflammation, tighten pores and plump the skin for an instant glow. Apply after cleansing and leave for up to 15 minutes and what you’ll be left with is a visage as stunning as the Mona Lisa – kind of.
