Barneys CO-OP has officially opened its doors in Brooklyn, and with the new store — located on the corner of Atlantic Ave. and Court Street in Brooklyn Heights — the brand’s notorious mix of edge and humor feels especially at home. Joining a small, but growing crop of specialty boutiques on “Hotlantic”, the new location has all the usual designer brands, and Barneys New York buyers admit to customizing the assortment to be a bit more gritty than other stores. A recent New York Times review sums up the new spot by explaining, “It’s haute Salvation Army à la Salvador Dalí and the wacky sensibilities that brought urinals into the art gallery. Brooklyn’s bourgeoisie may safely let its beard mat into felt and start shouting at passing cars: It knows where to shop to look sexily impoverished.”
