Band of Outsiders

New York: A crackling spaghetti Western anthem and a flaming red sunrise set a cinematic stage for Scott Sternberg’s inspired romp through old Southwest style. “It started with a trip to Mexico City,” Sternberg told the media backstage. “I was looking a lot at markets — blankets, embroideries, bracelets and shearlings. I wanted to take all of that kind of spin a new tale.” For the designer, that translated into a blend of more literal Southwestern references like woven blanket details (a big trend so far at New York Fashion Week), a sunset-like color palette, and nods to dapper pioneers — all mixed with urban accents and the brand’s signature tailoring. Indeed, while the Sternberg took a more literal approach to his points of reference, it never read “American Heritage” (something that’s come to be a bit cliche in menswear), or overly precious.  —Michael Fisher
