Two years after his first collection for the French luxury house, Alexander Wang appears to be establishing a number of signature motifs associated with his campaigns for the brand, namely concrete, black and white textures and restrained sexuality.
This is however the first time the designer has used more than one model in a campaign, unless of course you count Sasha Pivovarova appearing as a triplet in last season’s advertising.
In addition to selling the clothes, Kate and Lara also manage to somehow make Wang’s signature concrete background look luxurious and modern. Hair was by Anthongy Turner, continuing the slicked sideburns created for the runway show and styling by Val Garland. Artistic direction came from Pascal Dangin.
“For me, the fall collection began with the real women of Balenciaga — women who are multifaceted and multidimensional: strong and sensual yet also austere and mysterious,” said Alexander Wang.
The casting can also be looked at as a subtle appearance of the cyclical nature of the industry, revealed in the juxtaposition between the heroin-chic look Moss heralded in the 90s until more recently as models such as Stone began appearing, representing the trickle of ‘curvier’ models entering the runway.
The campaign will run internationally in July.
