New York: There are always a little bit of tongue-in-cheek touches from Wang to be found in his presentations and Pre-Summer was no exception. At Balenciaga, beach towels and logos served as a juxtaposition to the underlying theme of his collection – couture and the beach. Exploring the finite shapes of Cristobal Balenciaga, dresses were sculpted (a strong emerging trend for Pre-Collections) and crafted in appealing, feminine shapes. The impeccable craftsmanship appeared in dresses and jackets, some with peplums accentuating a trim waist, others cut and spliced, evoking an elaborate sculptural edge by manipulating material with folds and cuts. The beach came in the streamlined swimwear, a ‘surf’ scarf was worn with an exquisitely cut coat and trousers, and a ‘beach towel’ dress was provocatively wrapped and split for ultimate impact. There were stripes and florals and contrast edging cleverly outlining the defining features of a bodice but the cameo of black evening wear in a trouser suit and cocktail dress were just understated and beautiful. – Lizzy Bowring
