New York: It may be the end of the world as we know it, but Mark Badgley and James Mischka feel fine. It has been widely reported that the Mayan calendar predicts that the world will end this Friday, and the design duo made timely references to the designs created by the ancient civilization. There were sunbursts, geometric shapes, and pyramids. Gold – a favored material of the Mayans – was used as an accent for many pieces. Despite the apocalyptic inspirations, Badgley and Mischka told interviewers that they looked at the situation as an opportunity to think about beginnings rather than endings. One such beginning was their return to focusing on eveningwear. The designers have worked with daywear in recent seasons, but this time around, they concentrated almost solely on their signature gowns. The results were luxurious; any girl would be lucky to be caught in one of their dresses on the day that the world ends…or any other day, for that matter.–Joanna Manganaro
