Backstage Beauty | Gareth Pugh – S/S 2012

Backstage Beauty: Gareth Pugh S/S 2012Makeup: Alex Box
Hair: Martin Cullen
Nails: Marian Newman for Minx

Makeup was led by makeup artist Alex Box who referenced Nikola Tesla, the early 20th century scientist. “It’s about electricity and the early forms of it,” she explained. Using Minx nail strip and triangles of sticky, double-sided clear plastic, she created white, “floating” eyeliner for the models. An innovative move, this is the first time Minx nails have been used for makeup.  The brows were bleached to keep the attention on the angled  white liner. The rest of the face was kept fresh, clean, and dewy with lots of moisturizer for “newborn baby” skin that glowed thanks to Lucas’ Pawpaw Ointment. After the show, models’ eyebrows were dyed with ashen shades of Wella Koleston hair color to avoid any oranges aftereffects.

Hair was a mix-up of all the things Gareth Pugh is known for – stripes and futuristic beauty. “It’s back to old Gareth,” described Martin Cullen. Hair was small but graphic with a “sleek, retro wig-cap shape with a few ultra-modern twists and turns. It’s my interpretation of the latticework in the clothes.” Futuristic elements came via “heavily sprayed and flat-ironed half-inch pieces of contrasting hair extensions, that were dotted with weave glue and pasted onto model’s heads in a crisscrossed pattern.”

Nails were custom designed specifically for the show by celebrated nail tech Marian Newman and Minx co-founder Janice Jordan. Inspiration for the dégradé striped Minx  came from a few of the towering headpieces. “Gareth and his stylist, Katie Shillingford, envisioned using a nail shape for the models that would mirror the unique headpieces created for them,” Marian explained.”The top is rounded and the bottom is pointed.” Newman and Jordan created black and white striped Minx and purple and matte silver striped Minx that extended past the cuticle.  She also revealed that the models wore purple Minx on their toes and the four male models wore silver matte Minx on their fingers.
