Look: Beach Girl Chic
Makeup: Charlotte Willer for Maybelline
Hair: Eugene Souleiman for Wella Professionals
Nails: Elle for Essie
When Charlotte Willer heard that California beach girls were Donna Karan’s inspiration for DKNY, she immediately thought of girls who’ve “been on the beach all day and they’re tanned and have a glow… a little too much sun. It’s about the simplicity of beauty – fresh, sun-kissed and glowing.” To get that look, flawless skin was a must. Willer achieved this by applying a light layer of Maybelline’s Fit Me Foundation on the face. She then powdered with a brush rather than a puff because a brush gives more of a beautiful, satin finish. Bronzer was blended around the temples, high on the cheekbones and on the eyelids while blush was placed in the middle of the cheeks. “They’re all wearing hats so I wanted lots and lots of that pearly glow to their faces,” she explained. A touch of pearl eyeshadow was dabbed in the inner corner of the eyes and a light beige shade was swept across the lids and up to the brow bone. Lips were dabbed with the new Pop Stick in Raspberry Ice #110 – a cross between a gloss and a lip balm that goes on clear and then warms up with body heat.
If there’s one must-have product for Spring/Summer 2012, Willer recommends a lipstick in a color that you can use for lips and cheeks. “We’ve seen quite a bit of pinks and a little bit of orange on the lips – but not full-on color. For the most part it’s played down a bit, more like a stain.”

Souleiman saw that the girls would be wearing hats and decided to go with a chic, sexy, 70s, French girl look. All the models got extensions that were razor cut to the desired length. “The nice thing about it is that its two-toned. It’s such a summer-y collection that I thought it would be great if the girls looked like they had been in the sun. So it’s lighter on top and darker on the bottom, like natural color… like they were in the Hamptons for the summer and now back in the City. It’s DKNY, so it should feel sexier, energetic, cool and less ladylike than Donna Karan.” Hair was rolled into a soft bun, sprayed with Wella Ocean Spritz and set with heat through a diffuser from a hair dryer. As the final touch, the bun was taken down and ruffled with fingers to create texture. Because the clothes felt more dressed up, he wanted the hair to look a bit raw and disheveled.

Nails were a “bold nude” to complement the clothes’ vibrant prints and patterns. “This is a modern nude,” said essie manicurist Elle who led the nail team backstage. “It’s bold enough to stand up to the strong colors in the collection, yet the underlying pink tones flatters everyone and works for daytime and evening.”
Though its still early into the season, Elle predicts that cobalt blue will be a hot color for S/S 2012.
