London: If you looked up “Recipe for Disaster” in the fashion dictionary, you might find a shopping list that called for ingredients including sequins, bumble bee stripes, acid-washed jeans, and moth-eaten knitwear. Throw it all in a blender and what comes out? Well, something rather fantastic if the blender is Ashish. The designer took shabby chic to a whole new level with ripped and zipped drainpipe jeans, knitwear that was more decomposed than distressed, and sequined jackets with pearl buttons the size of golf balls. Inspired by the archetypal poor little rich girl, Ashish explored the very British concept of a titled girl from a country estate slumming it in East London. All she wears are her grandmother’s moth-ravaged sweaters, her mother’s worn-out church ensembles, and her boyfriend’s pinstripe suits. Luckily, everything is covered in sequins painstakingly arranged to form exaggerated plaids, herringbones and stripes. Margaret Thatcher was one of the designer’s inspirations, not only present in the 80s knitwear shapes, but also felt the cultural markers of her era – penniless students, race riots, conspicuous consumption, social class wars and punk. Think cult 80s British sitcom “Bottom”, a show about layabout students who invested more time in body-piercing, hair gel, and street protests than library research. At least Thatcher can console herself with the capitalist thought that somewhere out there, titans of the sequin manufacturing industry are rubbing their hands together with glee.
