In recent years, the urban landscape of Detroit has been going through a unique creative renaissance. Amidst a collapsed automotive industry, decrepit buildings and vacant warehouses are being seen as new business, art and culture opportunities.

WGSN recently travelled to Detroit for our latest Design Destination report. Along the journey, we found some inspiring museums, galleries and inventive urban art projects you don’t want to miss:

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS

One of the largest art collections in the U.S. featuring Diego Rivera’s famous Detroit Industry frescoes.

For 12 years Detroit resident Dmytro Szylak piled together found objects in his backyard creating a towering installation, which he considered an interpretation of Disneyland.

The museum is dedicated to the legacy of the Motown Record Corporation, its iconic artists and music. Yes it’s a classic, but it’s also still a must-visit location.
