Art & Design: Urbanized, a documentary film by Gary Hustwit

New York director Gary Huswit has released Urbanized, a fascinating documentary that explores the design of our major global cities and the future of our changing urban landscapes.

Urbanized is the third in a trilogy of films that follows the cult Helvetica (2007) a film about the Swedish typeface, and Objectified (2009), a film on the topic of industrial design.

With over half the world’s population already living in cities – according to government projections – Huswit investigates the issues, challenges and strategies behind urban design, the imminent growth facing some city areas, and the rise and fall of older cities and the lessons that can be learned from their demise.

Interviewing leading designers, planners, policymakers, landscape architects and thinkers from around the globe, Huswit takes the viewer on a journey of insight and discovery, exploring the various stages of urban design and development, and the many people who contribute to the shape and size of our major cities.

Rather than dwelling on the impending expansion of our cities and urban environments, Urbanized focuses on the creative and intelligent solutions that can make our over-run city dwellings more habitable, already seen in projects such as the High Line in New York City and the rising popularity of community gardens.
