This year, the Royal College of Art celebrated the 18th edition of their annual Secret series with an exhibition and sale featuring postcard-sized art from established artists, designers, illustrators and RCA postgraduate students.
Over 1,000 artists, including Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry, Yoko Ono, Mike Leigh and fashion designer Erdem, donated a one-of-kind postcard which was signed on the reverse, only revealing the designer’s identity when it was taken from the wall and purchased for £45.
The initiative each year hopes to raise more than £130,000 for the RCA’s Fine Art Student Award Fund – a bursary that enables talented, young artists to study at the prestigious college.
As rising tuition fees and continuing cuts threaten the future art world, it’s encouraging to see established artists getting involved with schemes such as this; ensuring that the next generation of artists are fully supported regardless of their background. By donating work that is potentially worth thousands of pounds the exhibition also enables members of the public to invest in fine art at a low cost. – Samantha Fox
