Art & Design: Murakami at Versailles

murakami1.jpg

Pop provocateur Takashi Murakamiis the latest artist to call the ornate halls of Versailles his own with 22 manga inspired installations, including 11 site-specific pieces.

At first glimpse, the exhibit may seem an odd pairing of artist and venue, however, Murakami’s gold buddhas and smiling flowers live in symbiosis within the palace’s baroque rooms. Curator Laurent Le Bon sought more than just ‘integration’ between installation and space – carefully selecting pieces that would create a ‘story within a story’ and inspire a dialog between the myths of Versailles and Murakami’s art.

The artist’s “Versailles, manga style” is not without controversy, in spite of this criticism, the show manages to be both dynamic and interesting.

Murakami Versailles
runs from 14th of September to 12th of December.
