We recently had the rare and exciting opportunity to celebrate the birthday of the talented, Hedi Slimane, and the publication of his four part book series, where he chronicles the last 10 years of his work and life through photograph, at LACMA‘s Art Catalogue Bookstore. With Slimane himself in attendance, along with a slew of his close friends, it was an intimate affair that generated quite a buzz.
Anthology of a Decade (2000-2010) is a well curated and raw documentation of youth and culture from his time spent in four major regions of the world; France, the UK, Denmark, Russia and the US. Flipping through the silky pages of each of the four books, Slimane’s indie-rock/high-fashion aesthetic cannot be denied, and each region is distinctly represented. France is a spectacular view of his work with the esteemed, Yves Saint Laurent and Dior including many of the campaigns from Dior Homme, while UK focuses on Slimane’s fascination with the indie music scene in London. US embodies the subcultures of Los Angeles and New York, contrasted with the poised restriction of Denmark and Russia. All four books perfectly capture the angst, androgyny, and aloofness that encompass this decade, as well as prove that many of the same characteristics still ring true for youth culture today.
Published by JPR|Ringier, this anthology was released as a limited edition with only 1,500 copies available around the world. For the few who have acquired this collection, we consider them lucky. – Courtney Schultz
