Art & Design: Frieze Masters

Launching in 2012, alongside Frieze Art Fair, Frieze Masters will be a separate exhibition showcasing contemporary art throughout history – from the old masters and antiquity through to the 20th century, with all work made before the year 2000.

Frieze organizers hope that the fair will allow for a fresher and contemporary perspective on historical art, while additionally encouraging new collectors, outside the realms of contemporary art, to visit the fair – and vice versa.

Approximately 70 international and leading galleries will be involved in this exciting venture; a programme of events that will include educational activities and talks from major artists, critics and curators, with the intention of ‘revolutionizing the relationship between ancient and modern, old and new.’

Artists and designers continually reference the past as a source of inspiration, yet there has long been an underlying divide between traditional and modern in terms of presentation and commerce; especially prevalent at fairs such as Frieze and Art Basel in Miami, each almost celebrating their 10th anniversary editions.  Arts writer for the Guardian Jonathan Jones recently commented

“Frieze Masters is the best news for art in Britain for years, for it will restore a civilized balance to the nation’s visual culture.”
