Milan: With forty years experience under his belt, Giorgio Armani took a pragmatic approach to his fall collection; “Here we don’t have to enchant, we have to sell.” Over the years Armani has given women a chic uniform of impeccably tailored wardrobe staples. For fall, Armani redefined these classics: his signature lean and cropped jackets stood strong amongst a flurry of textures such as bouclé, fringing and leather tiling. Painterly embroidery and prints were inspired by the brushstrokes of Chagall, offering an almost galactic feel to the collection. Above all, it was the trousers that stole the show: over eighty looks in total- and born from this intense exploration, a new shape : a wrap effect skirt was morphed into the pattern of a slim fit pant, creating a tulip-like closure to the front. Offered in a plethora of colours and styled with everything from funnel neck sweaters to flirty blouses – they were nothing but versatile and sure to be a staple item for the Armani archives. After the show, Armani was asked if he felt he had anything left to prove: “Do you think I have?” – he questioned, rhetorically. – Anna Ross
