Working as the Associate Editor of Retail & Buying at WGSN, a key part of my role is to keep up with the innovative and exciting ways retailers across Europe are making their mark; this can be anything from cool visual merchandising to more varied product offerings. My latest retail inspiration trip took me to Antwerp and Amsterdam, in search of the coolest boutiques that are offering stand out retail. Amsterdam’s Nine Streets is always a must-visit when I’m in town and this trip they didn’t disappoint. Also with sustainability as a focus it was great to see these stores making their mark in this space.

This lovely boutique delivers a full lifestyle offering from fashion, to eclectic lifestyle pieces, as well as jewellery/candles and plant pots. There’s also a coffee shop within the store and outdoor courtyard, and the company plans regular in-store events, the latest was a social media training workshop. If you are planning a trip, I’d advise staying in Maison Nationale, the boutique loft style apartments that are above the store.
Founded by two women Val and Rose, this fashion and lifestyle store has three different locations. One of the main ones is nestled in the Nine Streets (which is key retail neighbourhood, off-the-beaten track with mid market boutiques, Instagram worthy street style around there, and a whole different vibe to the city centre which is a stone’s throw away). The OU Amsterdam offering is a curated selection of mid market priced womenswear, as well as scarves, and jewellery. There’s also more lifestyle merchandise from beauty products (body scrubs and shampoos) to room sprays, toilet bags, phone covers, stationery, and of course rainwear for the local consumer.
This is your one stop shop for sustainability. While that word can bring up the image of slightly unfashionable wares, this store’s offering is the opposite of that. The products are cute and kitsch, so expect conversational prints and lovely quality. There’s also a very strong maternity wear offering for new mums to be.
The company’s tagline is: the world’s first 100% transparent company, and its ethos is transparent fashion. So the company works to offer up a full cost breakdown of its merchandise for sale. It’s a great place to discover new design talent, and feel better abut your purchases because you know more about the suppliers, the garment and even the in-store price mark up. With today’s consumers demanding more from their retailers this company is at the forefront of a new retail model.
