So I was at Smashbox Studios (which for some reason I keep referring to as “the tents”) for Day 3 of L.A. Fashion Week…and I was thinking about how the people who come to fashion shows are often just as interesting as what’s happening on the runway. I think I could be perfectly happy to just hang out in the lobby/lounge area at Smashbox and shoot photos and people watch without even seeing the shows. If you read this blog regularly, you already know I’m all about the streetstyle!
At least part of the reason why I came to LAFW however is to see the shows, and see shows I did. The photos you see immediately above and below are from L.A.-based designer Grant Krajecki’s strong Grey Ant show – a theatrical but cool as hell collection that featured high-waisted and wide-legged jeans and trousers (his signature pieces), a muted palette and subdued music, high heeled Tevas(!), a few non-traditional models, and a spaced out, glamorous, 70’s artist/hippie vibe that had me thinking of Warhol superstars like Viva, Candy Darling, and Joe Dallesandro and films like Trash and Heat – casually chic and art-damaged all in one package.
The muted palette, subdued music, and arty styling/presentation all went out the window at my next show of the day – Sophia Banks and Marissa Ribisi’s Whitley Kros collection. This line also has L.A. roots via Ribisi (Banks is from Sydney) and the warm weather, SoCal influence was all over this show – super bright colors, oversized cardigans with broad stripes (which looked fab paired with jeans and heels – so L.A.), t-shirt dresses and tunics, neon thigh highs and tights, and jeans in several hues. The models were cast perfectly for the clothes and the music was spot-on as well with tracks from LCD Soundsystem, Justice, and The Beach Boys. My favorite show of the week so far.
Check out my photos from the day below – including several shots of models at Smashbox wearing their own clothes. Models are people too!
