London: Amidst London’s youthful, experimental design scene, Antonio Berardi has become the key purveyor of a more conventional kind of glamour – one built on red carpet silhouettes, dazzling embellishments and sexy details. Berardi retained this luxurious sensibility for spring, but added a dose of the activewear influence that has run rampant in London the past few seasons. Berardi began with basketball, turning panels of mesh, faux croc and allover beading into motifs reminiscent of sleek indoor courts – glitter-coated wools, on the other hand, echoed roughened urban asphalts. Berardi could not resist the pull of the glitz in the end, as the show undulated into mermaid-like gowns and flapper dresses studded with the iridescent beads that, instead, evoked the courts of mythical undersea kingdoms.—Nivara Xaykao
